Our slot car track “philosophy” can be applied to your own designs:
Large tables with curves not easy to reach are to be avoided. In most cases, it is much better create a table top in the shape of the track to reduce it’s footprint, make it easier to move around and easier to reach areas where cars are are likely to crash. Another advantage is that it is then easier to add a wall that attaches to the side of the table and track perimeter. Walls directly along the curves are kinder to your cars.
Shoulders are your friends. By allowing cars to drift without touching guardrails or falling off the edge of a narrow track section, slot car track designss are much improved. With 1/24 scale cars or cars driven without traction magnets shoulders make a huge difference. They other even provide “parking space” for passing crashed cars.
Boxed track sets are not a good basis for a larger slot car track designs. Power supply, controllers and small radius turns included in sets are best put aside designing for more slot racing satisfaction. Most sets come with only the smallest curve sections. It is best to use larger curves and combinations of curve sizes, for a more sweeping , interesting design. Adjustable power supplies with more than adequate amperage allow adjusting for optimum speed motor life and power consistency. Better controllers give… surprise… better control and durability.
For digital slot car track designs, placement of switches and pit entry and exits are critical. Use of double length single lane switches in place of the abrupt pit lane entry switches is very helpful in preventing rear end collisions when slowing down to enter or exit pits.
The benefit of computer or table based lap counting systems cannot be overestimated. Sound effects, race commentary announcements, clear viewing of scoreboard with real time status and data. even integration with social media; all add tremendously to the racing experience. We no longer bother with most other race accessories. The best one may already be in your pocket or game room.

Why Carrera track?
Having tried every system on the market, we prefer and recommend Carrera track. Unlike wood tracks, Carrera 1/24 scale track it is reconfigurable, and requires less maintenance. Unlike other plastic modular systems available today, it is wide enough to run 1/24 scale. It is perfect for all 1/32 cars. 1/43 and even HO cars (with thicker guides) run better on Carrera track than they do their native systems. Carrera track works well with or without traction magnets. Its extra wide shoulders allow drifting without guardrail bashing. It is rigid enough to build sweeping elevation changes with minimal support and without bumps between sections. Flat curves can be banked slightly, and 30 degree banking is available. Carrera track can easily be attached to table surfaces for stability and to make modules and can store on edge between uses.
We have Carrera based tracks in heavy continuous use, for 15 years with no problems. The contacts are stainless with long springy connections, so no there is loss of conductivity. We have even run rally events on wet Carrera track and have customers who use them in outdoor gardens.

Most commercial tracks are sprayed with a treatment to increase traction. Most plastic sl0t car track users need to clean dust from their track and tires even if used daily, before good traction is restored. Many dedicated plastic track users paint their track surface to improve traction. We find that spray treating plastic tracks has several advantages. Dust attraction due to static charge is vastly reduced. Dust that does land on the track surface stays there, letting the track “rubber in” the way real racetracks do and it does not collect on tires. Treated tracks improve traction for all tire types, especially rubber and foam tires, so change so synthetic tires is not required. Treatment is easily removed when cleaning or increased to tame troublesome corners. We find the traction on a treated Carrera track surface to be “just right” for a wide range of cars. When running with magnets Carrera’s wider rails allow a bit of drift before cars come off their magnet. The mold stainless used has slightly less iron and magnetism than other brands so not only does it not rust, but it has less aggressive magnetism. When combined with it’s grippier treated surface, that is a very good thing for car control.
Our slot car track design software not only insures proper track inventory and fit, but gives us the ability to view our designs from any vantage point. So, we provide several views of each track in our web store. Also included with every track are detailed assembly drawings and phone support. Table building advice and even turnkey construction and installation on location are available from Nomad Raceways by request.
Currently, our focus is on optimal racing surfaces, so do not offer scenic figures or diorama materials. Track décor can be a hobby of its own, and we encourage it; that is, if you can stop driving or racing on your track long enough to do it!
